Starting Your Own Home Based Bookkeeping Service
Do you have bookkeeping skills? Do you know how to use some of the popular small business financial software programs, such as Quicken, QuickBooks or Peachtree?
Many small business owners need a part-time bookkeeper to keep track of their day to day expenses and income. You have the software, you have the skills — they don’t have the time. Acquire 5-10 clients on a monthly basis and you have just created a home-based income!
What skills will you need?
You must be good with paying attention to detail. It is crucial that you are accurate. You should own, and know how to use, software-based bookkeeping programs and spreadsheet programs. Honesty and confidentiality are crucial. Your client’s information is private and must be kept secure.
What tools are needed?
A reliable computer, preferably with system for daily back ups to protect your clients data. Up to date bookkeeping software is a must. Other tools that are needed are communication tools such as phone line, fax line, email address, etc.
How do you get started?
To begin your own bookkeeping business, it’s a good idea to get some business cards and promotional flyers. Mail your flyers to local businesses letting them know what services you offer. Join your local chamber of commerce and begin getting involved in community events where you can put yourself in situations to meet business people and become known in your community. Another good way to get started is to place an ad in the local newspaper or go online to Craigslist.org. Having a website available that details your services and lists your rates might be another option to look into it; you can create a simple website yourself, or pay someone to create one for you.
Don’t get discouraged if business is not great immediately. New ventures, big or small, often take time. Do good work for your first few clients and soon you will have referrals. So once you have your first client make sure to go the extra mile to ensure satisfaction. Satisfied, happy clients will help to spread the word about your business.
